Ministry Spotlight: Missionary Society of St. Columban

DonorDirect is excited to celebrate a 12-year partnership with the Missionary Society of St. Columban!

The Columbans are a society of missionaries, including priests and laypeople, who minister to people of various cultures as a way of witnessing to the universal love of God. They go in the name of the Church to announce, by deed and word, the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Ministry Overview

The Missionary Society of St. Columban was formally founded in 1918 and takes its name from St. Columban, Ireland’s sixth-century missionary to Europe and they currently work in the United States, as well as many countries around the world.

Their mission throughout the world is to facilitate the formation of vibrant faith communities and help struggling people regain their dignity. Through their diverse efforts, they challenge the oppressive structures of poverty, illiteracy, violence, and injustice. Their social, economic, medical, and educational programs are open to all regardless of religious affiliation. Here are just a few ways to connect with this wonderful ministry:

  • Give a gift and change the world! As a Columban donor, you play a vital role in bringing Christ to people living on the margins of society in some of the poorest countries on earth. Your gift can help feed the hungry by helping them find ways to feed themselves, care for the sick who cannot afford medical care, educate the poor to help them end their poverty, and cross boundaries of culture and country to build vibrant faith communities, enabling people to create better futures for themselves and their children.
  • Columban Mission Sponsors provide dependable financial support on a monthly ongoing basis.  As a Columban Mission Sponsor, you play a vital role in bringing Christ to the people of the Pacific Rim, South America, and Central America. You may not be able to go where our Columban missionaries go and do what we do, but together we can bring Christ, in word and in sacrament to the people of the world. As a mission sponsor, you will join other caring members who provide dependable financial support on a continuing monthly ongoing basis to help those most in need.
  • Join the Columbans in Daily and Weekly Prayer and stay up-to-date on current news by accessing their Monthly Newsletter.

  • The Columban Mission Magazine has been published since the ministry was founded in 1918 and it details the powerful work and lives of Columban missionaries around the world.
  • The Columban Mission Center is located in El Paso, Texas, and offers exposure programs to visiting groups and facilitates their contact with organizations and institutions related to U.S./Mexico border issues — poverty, migration, and human rights. In addition, the Center is a venue for talks, courses, and workshops for the local community.
  • The St. Columban Retreat Center is located in the heart of Bellevue, Nebraska, and is ideally situated on a beautiful campus with many tree-lined roadways, large open fields for group activities, and a beautiful walking path down to a private Grotto where you can meditate on the Stations of the Cross and Stations of the Resurrection, or reflect on the martyred Columban Fathers who have their name displayed in the Memorial Garden. This venue has undergone some recent updates and offers an onsite catering kitchen, AV equipment, meeting rooms, and guest accommodations, making it a wonderful venue for graduation parties, anniversaries, birthdays, wedding receptions, and meetings.
